Is busyness keeping you from your most important work?
Another writer friend of mine made a joke that her house is never as clean as it is when she is writing a book! I can relate. We are all well aware of how procrastination can hold us captive. The problem with busyness is that it can feel like we are being so productive. But we can use being busy with so many shallow things to keep us from the most important things that are stirring in our hearts.
For me it’s almost like hiding. If I’m honest, maybe it’s fear of sitting down to write and not liking what I produce. It could be fear of the long road ahead of producing more work. Whatever it is I sometimes use the little things to keep me as far away from the big things as possible. It’s intimidating to sit down to an empty screen and start typing. When I finally do it it is always a joy, a feeling of calm and release. Writing is one of the most rewarding things that I do so why does it seem like I’m avoiding it at times?
We can have so much fear about the future, fear of failure, and tonnes of excuses to keep us from the most important things in our lives. Habits and small decisions we make can keep us from attacking some of the greatest problems we have. I don’t want to be a victim of that. Each week I try to evaluate what held me back and what I did to give into that. A friend recently suggested a great book that I listened to. It’s called Deep Work and I highly recommend it. It is all about taking time to focus in a distracted world. I’m always looking for ways to improve rhythms in my life and ways to maximize my personal potential. I like to find ways to conquer my weaknesses in the area of accomplishing my purpose. I found this book to come at the right time it confirmed a lot of what I was already sensing needed to happen in my life.
I think in order to conquer this habit to avoid the big things in favor of the small, we really need to be honest with ourselves. Almost every day we have at least one chance and opportunity to move closer to our dreams and we need to take that shot even if it’s just an inch and then with that under our belt we can look at going even further.
How will you inch toward the biggest things in your life today?
